Artist JR Creates "Chronicles of New York City" Mural at Domino Park
By Marnie Kunz
French artist JR has been documenting New Yorkers in visuals for a while now, and you can see his stunning photography work at “JR: Chronicles” at the Brooklyn Museum. Now his NYC images are in the streets as well, with his “Chronicles of New York City” mural that just went up at Domino Park in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
For the massive mural at Domino Park, JR photographed over 1,000 New Yorkers and compiled them into the slice of life mural that depicts New Yorkers from every borough. The installation was created using stacked shipping containers as a backdrop. JR worked with architectural firm LOT-EK to realize the mural installation.
The details of people’s faces in this work is reminiscent of JR’s gun control mural at the Bowery Wall. Check out our post on it here.
Artist JR creates participatory murals inspired by Mexican painter Diego Rivera’s works from the first half of the 20th century. In 2018, JR roamed the streets of New York photographing more than 1,000 New Yorkers who wished to participate in the project for The Chronicles of New York City. Their stories are available on the free JR: Murals mobile app.
To see this beautiful mural in more detail, it’s worth running by the scenic Domino Park in Williamsburg, located at 300 Kent Avenue in Brooklyn.
